Broxburn community art project hit with tragedy a second time

  • Artist Mike Inglis with four of his works

Awful news- a Broxburn community art project has been hit with tragedy again.

Mike Inglis’ large musical figures has been stolen for a second time. The figures are part of the Shale People Project celebrating the history of our town.

The figures are of the Broxburn and Livingston Brass Band playing musical instruments.

Seven have been stolen and one is badly damaged. The cruel theft happened just hours after the art was put up again.

It is only weeks since they were stolen the first time. To read about the first incident read Shirley Anne Murdoch’s report.

Shirley-Anne Murdoch says

I'd just like to clarify that since installing a new set of artworks (thanks to The Sign Company, Kirkcaldy who reproduced and re-installed artworks for what little funds we had left in our project budget) one artwork has been stolen (again). This vinyl figure was positioned on the fire door of Broxburn Swimming Pool- and will now not be replaced again. Another artwork has been damaged since re-installation at Aldo's Fish Bar in Uphall- this will not be repaired. Artist Mike Inglis is simply devastated at the destruction of his series of works- which has taken over ten months to develop with members of the community and specifically the Broxburn and Livingston Brass Band . These artworks are key works in a quest to visually and cultural enrich this community through engaging the people to create or inform thought-provoking, contemporary artworks.

Five out of the seven artworks originally stolen were returned due to the honesty and respect shown by community members who I believe truly represent the majority of the people of Broxburn and Uphall.  The stolen works belong to this entire community, not the mindless magpies who seemed to arrogantly regard it their right to own them for themselves or to remove and destroy before anyone else had the chance to possibly enjoy them.
